10. Milan - Rick Steves Europe

  • Latest Milan Travel Forum Posts · Lake Garda for 5 days early October · Arriving in Milan on Easter Sunday April 20 · trains from Bologna to Varenna.

  • While many tourists come to Italy for the past, Milan is today's Italy. The nation's fashion, industry, banking, TV, publishing, and convention capital, Milan is a hardworking, style-conscious, time-is-money city of 1.3 million. In this city of refined tastes, window displays are gorgeous, cigarettes are chic, and even the cheese comes gift-wrapped. Yet thankfully, Milan is no more expensive for tourists than any other Italian city. While it doesn't have the artistic oomph of Rome or Florence, Milan still has several significant sights — most notably its Duomo, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping arcade, La Scala Opera House, and Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper.

13. Marseille - Rick Steves Europe

  • Latest Marseille Travel Forum Posts · Annency to Marseille Road Trip · Cassis Honeymoon ideas · TGV last minute purchases Marseille/Aix to Avignon?

  • Most tourists leave Marseille off their itinerary — it doesn't fit their idea of the French Riviera or of Provence (and they're right). France's oldest and second-biggest city (and a leading European port) is an untouristy, semiseedy-but-vibrant city with a history that goes back to ancient Greek times — and challenges you to find its charm. It's a world apart from France's other leading cities, and has only one essential sight to visit (Notre-Dame de la Garde). Here the city is the museum, the streets are its paintings, and the happy-go-lucky residents provide its ambience.

17. Italy Travel Guide by Rick Steves

  • Explore Italy! Get inspired with Rick Steves' recommended places to go and things to do, with tips, photos, videos, and travel information on Italy.

  • Bell'Italia! Italy has Europe's richest, craziest culture. After all, this nation is the cradle of European civilization — established by the Roman Empire and carried on by the Roman Catholic Church. As you explore Italy, you'll stand face-to-face with some of the world's most iconic images from this 2,000-year history: Rome's ancient Colosseum and playful Trevi Fountain, Pisa's Leaning Tower, Florence's Renaissance masterpieces (Michelangelo's David and Botticelli's Venus), and the island city of elegant decay — Venice. Beyond these famous sights, though, Italy offers Europe's richest culture. Traditions still live within a country that is vibrant and fully modern. Go with an eye open to both the Italy of the past and of the present.
